Day 8- Washington DC
Today the tour was to George Washington’s estate, Mount Vernon. We have been there, so we decided to skip it and just walk around the Warf. We are docked next to a huge, and I mean huge, fish market. I asked if they really sell all of it in one day and they told me, “Yes.” Hard to believe there is any crab, oysters, or fish left in the Chesapeake Bay at all. I think we should have had a tour there to show us how to eat crab. They had small, medium, and large either females or male crabs. The guy told us the females are a little sweeter. You could buy them live or steamed. We saw people walking off with large bags, so it is a popular place. I think if we lived here, we would have a lot of fish or crab dinners.
Next we went on the replica of the Santa Maria. We were early so were able to talk to the crew. What an interesting job for a young person. They sail all over the world, see so many interesting places. It would take someone like Ryder who does not get sea sick, but what a fun job. So many wonderful things to do in the world! They said they were always looking for crew. I asked why Columbus took only one large ship and two smaller ones. I loved the answer. Just like today the reason was funding. Makes sense! People thought Columbus was crazy. We saw it sailing from Baltimore to here. It is only here for a few weeks before it moves to its next location. One of its later stops will be St. Augustine.
