Juneau Day 8
Juneau was named after a gold rush prospector, Joe Juneau. Juneau is the only capital of the continental US that is inaccessible by car. It is set in a dramatic and beautiful fjord waterway.
We flew by float plane to the Taku Glacier lodge. We flew over five glaciers which showed the harshness of this landscape. The lodge has a long history, but one of the owners, Mary Joyce, was the most interesting. She raised sled dogs and mushed her dogs from Juneau to Fairbanks. That is a 1,000 mile journey. She had five dogs with her and all five made the entire journey. The lodge still had her actual sled and the dog harnesses.
They grilled salmon for us which was fun to watch the process. I also enjoyed watching our chef continually look over his shoulder for black bears. The bears love licking the coals for the dripping from the salmon.
