Day 7- Washington DC

Today the tour was a bus tour of the monuments which we have seen. So we decided to go to the DAR museum and then go to the Smithsonian’s.  We were told there is a free shuttle to take us to the mall but it was delayed due to malfunctions.  That turned out to be exceedingly lucky for us. We knew the shuttle went to the mall but did not realize how far it was from the DAR museum. We decided to take a taxi which took us directly to the museum. Our timing was perfect as when we arrived at the DAR, a woman was just about to give a tour.   Her tour was perfect as we went to the period rooms. These are actual rooms from different states which are rooms decorated exactly like they would have been in the day which really gave us a feeling of history from the colonial period to the Civil War in each of the states represented. Of course most rooms represented the Revolutionary Period.

Because I am a DAR daughter, she took us to see the DAR historic brass eagle lectern that many Presidents have used at the inaugural luncheon. It was presented to the DAR in 1905 and is often used in many prestigious DAR events. Glad we went.

Next we walked to the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. The terrorists of 9/11 certainly left their mark as we had to stand in line for almost an hour to get through security before we could enter. I think Ryder and Jed would both love the museum. The dinosaur skeletons were extremely well displayed. We also liked the mammal room. Lots of good info.

Then we decided to go to the Bible Museum.  It had a slight fee so no line like the free Smithsonian’s.  We stayed there almost three hours and only saw a fraction of the museum. One floor was the impact the Bible has had on our world. One could stay there all day listening to the stories. The stories were so well displayed. The second floor was this amazing portrayal of the stories of the Bible. It took thirty minutes to see it all. One part I have seen on Facebook is people walking through when Moses parts the Red Sea. Pretty cool! The next floor was the stories of the New Testament and unfortunately we just didn’t have time to see it all.

We were able to take the free shuttle back to our ship which is parked right in the middle of the city.
