Day 5 - Yorktown

Today was a gorgeous weather day; just perfect for going to Jamestown Settlement which is mostly outside.  We had an hour guided tour and then an hour on our own. We first visited the Powhatan Native American village. One could spend an entire day there listening to the reenactors tell their stories. I asked what they would have made their houses out of and they told me native grasses, but today the grass looking sheets come from China. Something wrong with that but it gives one the impression.  Next on to the three ships that brought them here. Really small and I would have definitely needed bonine which of course did not exist in their day. It gave me a really good idea of the size of the Mayflower. Then on to the fort and all of the Jamestown stories that we are all so familiar with. What a hard life, and so amazing that with all of their problems they existed.

After our tour we came back to the ship, ate lunch, and then rode the Yorktown trolley to the American History Museum.  We went to a reenactment of shooting a musket and why they marched side by side facing the enemy. Then with audience participation we had a cannon crew fire a cannon.  It takes four people per cannon to fire it. I am sure it can be done with less but it takes such a long time to prepare the cannon with five people, can’t imagine how long it would take to five it with less. Tom got some great photos. Lots of fun.
