Hello All Day 3

The adventure continues.  The day before we saw 12 bears and yesterday we saw 15. The weeks previous they only saw 9 bears total in three days. Our guide said that was because the weather was too hot for the bears. We are seeing so many bears because he believes the Hudson Bay will freeze over in about another week and the bears are getting ready to go out onto the ice to hunt seals. The bears are starting to eat kelp to get their systems ready for eating seals. I found that most interesting because I feed the dogs kelp. The bears will actually pounce on the kelp like they will on the ice to catch seals. Some of our group caught some great photos. We saw a mother bear sleeping and her single cub was playing next to her, pouncing on kelp beds. We also saw two young males sparing but they were behind a snow drift so not the best photos. We also found the mother bear and her three cubs. Interesting the noticeable difference in activity level between the single cub and the triplets. Later we saw a red fox and I got some great video of it. Then we saw another red fox and a bear was chasing it. However, Garrett, our guide, explained that the bear wouldn’t chase too far because the fox would not provide enough calories. Going into town we saw a silver fox.

I must admit being here out on the tundra is like we stepped out into another world.
